Throughout the book Wonder Auggie’s English teacher, Mr Browne, introduces the children to a new precept each month. “What is a precept?” I hear you ask. Well the children in Auggie’s class weren’t that sure to begin with either. In the chapter ‘Choose Kind’ he wrote on the board that a precept was a rule about really important things and that they made us think about what kind of person we were.

This is our class book for the term. August (Auggie) Pullman was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He’s about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you’ve ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie’s just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. After being given a homework sheet earlier in the week that focussed on Greek word history we discovered that needed to look at this in more detail. So today in class we investigated Greek word roots.
We started off by looking at Greek number prefixes such as ‘mono’, ‘bi’ and ‘tri’. We have managed to come up with the following list so far:
Mono – monobrow, monorail
Bi – biathlon, bicycle, bicentennary, biplane, bicentennial
Tri – triceratops, tripod, triathlon, tricycle, triplets, trifle, triplane, triangle, triple, tricorn
Your task is to try and find other words that fit these categories. Don’t forget, mono means one, bi means two and tri means three. Your words need to have something to do with these numbers.

Artist in Schools was a fun exiting time when we did Drama. On the first day we had a person called Stevie we played a fun game called bus stop. We had two people pretending they were at the bus stop and one person tried to get the other off the seat. The next week we had a lady called Sage we played a really fun game called twitch. In this game you had to have a tennis ball thrown at you and you had to catch it. If she pretends to throw it at you and you twitch you are out. We also played a game to do with our voice it was called yes and e.g. hey do you want to come to my party? Yes and can I bring my dog? Yes and then we can go to the park. It keeps repeating until someone doesn’t start with yes and.

Since the start of term 3, 5/6E has been reading a class book call A ‘Banner Bold’. It is an Australian Story book based in the 1850’s. It is about a girl named Rosa who travels to Australia with her family during the gold rush. As part of a task to do with the book we got handed a sheet with Sociograms on it. A sociogram is a type of diagram that can display a number of things, we used it to display relationships between characters.

I think Mr Legg is at TFC to talk to Charlies mum and is going to say that Charlie has been encouraging preps to do the wrong things and talk back to teachers.
Mr Legg was at the TFC because he goes there every afternoon to pick up his wife from work.

Eager and excited, the grade 6s said their goodbyes and piled onto the bus while others went in the car. We were off to Sovereign Hill for 3 days and 2 nights, to explore and learn what life was like in the 1850’s on the goldfields. In preparation to do this we had to do numerous of subjects such as gold book, gold diary and learn a lot about the Eureka Stockade, to have some knowledge of what we were going to see on camp. In Ballarat, for the whole 3 days we had cold winds, muddy clothes and drizzly downpours on and off, but that didn’t stop us from having a great time. We did school on the last few days, and rules were strict and everyone had to obey them, posture was important and we had to address our teacher as “Ma’am” or a man “Sir” after we had said a sentence.
The Eureka sound and light show, was spectacular with its blazing fires and real life speaking and movement when no one was there. The whole time it felt like you were there watching it happen in 1854.

The whole of the grade 5-6’s have been working on the integrated topic called Gold. We’ve been working all day and night to produce an excellent presentation into each and every one of our gold pages. Our Gold Books are a great way to present all of our knowledge of gold and to show off our presentation skills.
All the way back in the 1850’s, there were gold miners that were traveling to Australia to discover gold. Some were lucky with their fortunes, some others weren’t. You know Melbourne? It used to be called Smelbourne! That was the cities nickname because of how smelly, polluted, dusty and dirty the whole of Melbourne was. It was a very dangerous place Australia was, cruel and crowded everywhere you look.

On Friday the 23rd of August the entire grade 5s went to the huge city of Melbourne for an excursion. Leading up to this we had to make our own brochure and a group brochure. This was very hard work but in the end all the brochures turned out great. In my group there were 3 girls and 1 adult (also known as my mum). The brochure was made for a tourist that didn’t know where to go in Melbourne and didn’t have any money. We had to visit 6 free places.

We had to start at the Tourist Information Centre at Federation Square and had to finish at Flagstaff gardens. The 6 places my group went to was Federation Square, Suga, Flinders Street Station, the State Library, Chinatown / Chinese Museum and Queen Victoria Market.
