Buddies Activity Number 2

On Thursday we were lucky enough to spend another lesson working with our Grade 6 Buddies. There is always such excitement in the room when the children know that their buddies are on there way. They have been invaluable in helping the children settle into their first few weeks at school, having snack and lunch with us each day and helping us to change our readers.

From next week our buddies will meet us in the playground and we will be responsible for changing our own readers.

Back to Thursday morning though… In this session our buddies brought their netbooks over and we worked together to create a cover for our Reading Goals books that will be coming home in our reader bags very soon. We enjoyed using Microsoft Word to create our headings and looking through Google images for pictures of our favourite books.

Multi-Sensory Maths

On Thursday in maths we practised forming our numerals 1-5. We used play dough to make sausages and then form into numbers, sticky ‘Wikki Stix’ that we stuck onto the tables, white boards, ipads and we used shaving cream on foil!!  We enjoyed using the different materials to build our fine motor skills and improve our writing.

It was heaps of fun! Check out our slideshow below by clicking on the picture.

Independent Reading

On Thursday we learnt all about reading. We started off by watching a short video of Bert and Ernie. You can show it to mum and dad by clicking on the picture below. Bert is trying to show Ernie how much fun reading can be.

After we watched the video we talked about some of the reasons why we might read. Here are some of the things we came up with:

– It’s important

– To learn

– To share a story

– So we can read when we are older

– To practise concentrating

– To help us get smart

– For enjoyment and fun

Next we talked about some of the different ways we might read because as we know some of us are still learning how to read. Some of us might be able to tell a story through looking at the pictures, some of us might be able to recognise some of the letters and some of us might be able to read some or all of the words.

3 ways we read

So that we knew the correct behaviours for Independent Reading Mrs McConville and I pretended we were students reading. One of us was very good at Independent Reading and one of us was VERY VERY naughty!!!!!

Finally we got to practise Independent Reading for ourselves. We managed to read quietly for 2 and a half minutes. If we practise every day soon we will be able to read quietly for 10 whole minutes!!! Have a look at us reading in the slideshow below.
