There has been a few questions regarding our classroom reading program and the swapping of take home readers so I thought it would be worthwhile to explain the program in detail on our blog for all to access 🙂
Each student in Prep D has now had at least one session with a classroom reading helper. Now that we have our classroom reading program up and running the selection of pink dot books has changed.
Each morning when students arrive they are expected to complete their morning routine, which includes placing their pink independent reading book box on their tables. Once students have placed their book box on their table they are expected to swap their take home reader in their book bag for a pink dot book that is housed in their book box. Students and parents are no longer required to exchange the pink dot books that are taken home with those located in the classroom library.
The reason for this is that on your child’s allocated reading day they will work with the classroom reading helper to change the 5-6 pink dot books in their book box.
During this session, students make a prediction and practise walking through the books independently to tune themselves in to the vocabulary that may be used in the story. Following their walk through, students then practise reading these pink dot books with one of our helpers.
The books are then used in independent reading and as take home readers for a week to help students gain familiarity with the high frequency words that are used in these books. In conjunction to this, it also enables students to practise the reading strategies we have been learning in class such as pointing 1 to 1 to the words and using eagle eye, lips the fish and listening lion with confidence. You can view the posters for these strategies in the slideshow below and I will also link this post to our news and notes page so that you can always find it.
When it comes to home reading the following blog article also provides some useful tips and advice. Have a read here: http://creatingalearningenvironment.com/?p=213
Below is the parent helpers roster and the day that you child will change their books.
